An alloy steel rolling member

1997
A rolling member containing 0.6-0.9% C, 0.1-0.7% Si, 0.5-1.1% Mn and 0.1-0.6% Cr, preferably having from 9-22% by volume retained austenite. Also disclosed is a steel member of the same composition as the rolling member above which is moved relative to Cr containing steel rolling elements of a rolling device. The Cr content of the matrix of the rolling elements may be 0.6% or more greater than that of the matrix of the member (a claimed composition of the rolling elements being 0.95-1.1% C, 0.15-0.35% Si, 0.1-0.5% Mn and 1.3-1.6% Cr) for improved member resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. Alternatively, either the member or rolling elements may contain 6% by volume or less of austenite or the carbide area fraction of the member divided by the carbide area fraction of the rolling elements may be 0.9 or less to reduce the noise as the member and rolling elements move relative to each other.
