Artificial aggregates could be a potential way to realize microbial self-healing concrete: An example based on modified ceramsite

2021
Abstract Bacterial-based self-healing is a promising technology for increasing durability of concrete. Meanwhile, the survival of bacteria in concrete and the persistence of repair efficiency have become focus. In this study, the modified ceramsite particles as carriers for bacteria were used for developing this technology. After comparing corrosive modification, mechanical modification was selected. Ceramsite particles were crushed and impregnated with self-healing agent. At the same time, nutrients have been embedded in the modified ceramsite in the form of powder. Then the new formed particles were encapsulated by organic protective layer to achieve better performance. The results show that the immobilizing capability, protection, mechanical properties and interface of the ceramsite are significantly improved after modification.
