Multiple rectangular slots cut rectangular microstrip antenna for wide band response

2018
E-shape microstrip antenna is obtained by cutting pair of wide rectangular slots on the edge of rectangular microstrip antenna. Recently wideband design of modified E-shape microstrip antenna by embedding more than two rectangular slots on the radiating edge of patch is reported that gives VSWR bandwidth of 27.2%. This paper presents detailed study about wide band behavior of multiple slots cut rectangular patch antenna as well as provides its comparison against equivalent E-shape patch. It was noticed that due to presence of multiple slots, along with second order, fourth order orthogonal mode frequency of the rectangular patch reduces and due to its optimum spacing with reference to dominant mode of the patch, yields wider bandwidth of 27% in 2000 MHz frequency range. It is shown in the paper that this bandwidth is smaller than the bandwidth observed in two slot cut design, i.e. E-shape patch. Further multiple slots cut design of rectangular patch is presented in 1000 MHz frequency range that gives bandwidth of 220 MHz (∼23%) with peak gain of 8 dBi.
