The progress in developing of large volume high pressure xenon gamma-ray spectrometers

The main characteristics of the cylindrical ionization chamber with a shielding grid are considered in comparison with other types of xenon-filled gamma-ray detectors. The chamber has a sensitive volume of 5 liters and is filled with xenon at a pressure of about 45 atm. The main characteristics of this detector (e.g. energy resolution, efficiency of detection and position of the full absorption peak) for various gamma-ray energies are presented. It is shown that the energy resolution at 662 keV is 2.2% for an optimal electrical field. In addition, these detectors display high radiation resistance, the capability of operating in field conditions at high temperature for years without any energy resolution deterioration, and vibration and acoustic stability. The prospects for use of such cylindrical compressed xenon ionization chambers are considered.
