Constrained deformation of a lamellar structure

2007
Lamellar interfaces are efficient obstacles for propagating plastic deformation and can force the total strain to be parallel with the interfaces even if the shear stress acting on the interface plane is zero. This phenomenon of channelling plastic deformation deserves specific attention as it has important technological impacts. However, it is also interesting to examine what happens when such plastic deformation is prevented by external restrictions to propagate freely in deformation channels. A complex deformation of lamellar structure resulting from the applied compressive stress acting parallel to the lamellae together with the zero strain prescribed in the perpendicular direction is discussed.
