An Efficient Synthesis of 2-Chloro-3-carboethoxy- or 2-Chloro-3-cyano- 4,5-disubstituted and -5-substituted Pyrroles.

Abstract Reaction of substituted 2-cyano-4-oxo-alkanoic acid ethyl esters or 2-cyano-4-oxo-alkanonitriles with HCl gas in 2-propanol or concentrated HCl in 2-propanol for the dinitriles provides an efficient synthesis of substituted 2-chloropyrroles from readily available starting materials and reagents.
