[Turkish and Moroccan women: family planning in Flanders and Brussels and in the countries of origin]

1994
Moroccan and Turkish communities constitute the most important migrant populations living in Flanders and Brussels today. Some aspects of their family formation with emphasis on contraceptive behavior are described and are compared with the behavior of the autochtonous population as well as with that of the nonmigrant population in the countries of origin. The desired and realized fertility of Turkish and Moroccan women in Belgium is higher than that of the nationals but they both want and have smaller families than the nonmigrant couples in Turkey and Morocco. The majority of migrants approves the use of contraceptives is aware of several methods and knows where assistance in family planning can be obtained. Their contraceptive profile is comparable to that of the autochtonous population: all three groups are characterized by a high incidence of contraceptive use and by the use of modern effective methods although differences in the choice of these methods exist. The contraceptive profile of the migrant populations is more modern than that of the nonmigrant populations. (authors)
