Radiation pattern of photodiode based bowtie antennas

2021
Photodiode based emitters are established for continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy and highly relevant for future wireless communication due to seamless integration in fiber-optical networks. For both applications, the directivity and the beam profile are of major interest. We investigated the radiation pattern experimentally between 100 GHz and 500 GHz. Radiation properties can be linked directly to the antenna structure due to the identical packaging and material of all emitters. We observed a large influence of the feeding point structure that connects photodiode and antenna. We demonstrate a new antenna with increased directivity and lower side lobes.
