The invention relates to an illumination device for generating light with different radiation characteristics, comprising an excitation light source for emitting blue excitation light, a beam-shaping element and a converter for converting a portion of the excitation light. In this case, the converter in the beam path of the excitation light source is arranged to convert a portion of the excitation light in longer wavelength light and for reflecting another part of the excitation light. By superimposing the converted light and the emitted by the converter excitation light in the vicinity of a desired, predetermined color impression can be created, whereas the total emitted light in the far range homogeneous appears white.
