Enhancing the Performance of Distribution Network Using Ferry-to-Grid Technology

2019
With the rising greenhouse effect and its environmental impact due to emission from ferries in the port area, the electrification of ferries seems to be a promising solution. The electric ferry (EF) when parked in to the dockyard can provide its redundant power to the distribution network (DN) with help of aggregator. For providing support to DN during peak load the paper proposes a "virtual" energy trading process between DN and EF with help of aggregator. The impact of EF integrating with DN is analyzed using the load flow method i.e. forward/backward sweep (FBS) method. For performance enhancement of DN, weak nodes of DN are identified using FBS method and EFs are integrated on such weak nodes for improving voltage profile and reducing losses of DN. The representative case study is carried out on standard IEEE 33 bus system and the results shows improvement in voltage profile and losses are reduced.
