The invention discloses a button setting method and a mobile terminal. Two volume adjusting buttons are parallelly disposed on the lateral side of the mobile terminal. The connecting line of the two buttons is parallel with the lateral side of the mobile terminal. The button setting method includes: detecting the direction of an interface; respectively setting the two buttons as a volume-up button and a volume-down button when the connecting line of the two buttons is parallel with the direction of the interface so as to allow the direction from the volume-down button to the volume-up button to be identical with the direction of the interface; respectively setting the two buttons as the volume-up button and the volume-down button when the connecting line of the two buttons is vertical to the direction of the interface so as to allow the direction from the volume-down button to the volume-up button to be identical with the direction, obtained after turning 90 degrees clockwise, of the interface. By the method, button recognition difficulty of a user after screen switching can be lowered.
