Impact of Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) on Sub Synchronous Control Interaction (SSCI) in DFIG Systems Using Sequence Domain Impedance Method

2020
Wind energy, as a promising renewable and clean energy resource, has caused problems including power quality issues and electromagnetically oscillations such as sub-synchronous resonance. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) has been proposed as a solution to improve dynamic frequency stability in wind turbines, but its impact on the risk of sub-synchronous resonance has not been investigated so far. This study, for the first time, presented that while VSG control helps tracking the rated frequency in normal operations and reviving the frequency during disturbances in the power grid, it increases the risk of occurrence of SSCI.
