Influence of glass fiber on tribological characteristics and wear mechanism of MC nylon based composite

1999
Dry friction and wear characteristic of glass fiber reinforced MC nylon (GF/MC) composite was investigated on a MM 200 model friction and wear testing machine, and the wear mechanism was discussed based on the analyses of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), compared with that of MC nylon. The results show that under the given testing conditions the friction temperature of both MC and GF/MC rises with the increment of load and sliding speed; The friction coefficient of MC nylon decreases with the increment of load and sliding speed, and that of GF/MC increases at first and then goes down, and has a maximum value. When the PV value is less than 84 N·m/s , the friction coefficient and wear rate of GF/MC is lower than that of MC nylon. The wear mechanism of both materials is adhesive and abrasive wear, but adhesion wear of GF/MC is lighter than that of MC. When the PV value is over 84 N·m/s , the friction coefficient of GF/MC is a little higher than that of MC, and the wear rate of GF/MC is much higher than that of MC. The main wear mechanism of GF/MC is fatigue delamination and abrasive wear, and that of MC nylon is adhesive and abrasive wear.
