INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN AND ASSESSMENT An Objective Standardized Clinical Examination (OSCE) in an Advanced Nonprescription Medicines Course

2010
SUMMARY Small group recitation periods were incorporated ina nonprescription medicine elective to make learningmore interactive. Also, an OSCE to assess student phar-macists’ counseling skills on nonprescription medicineswas added tothe course. Collegesof pharmacy have to beable to quantify students’ learning to assure that the com-petencies addressed by the course were actually learnedand canbeappliedbythe students.Small grouprecitationperiods and OSCE assessment are 2 good methods thatbuild upon each other to ensure students have learned thematerial that was taught.
