Characteristics and risk factors of heart failure in elderly critically ill patients

Objective To investigate the characteristics and risk factors of heart failure in elderly critically ill patients. Methods The clinical data of 100 elderly critically ill patients treated in emergency department of the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from January of 2016 to July of 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were divided into 65 patients without heart failure and 35 patients with heart failure, and the characteristics of heart failure and related risk factors were analyzed. Results The age, incidence rates of coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, respiratory failure, renal insufficiency, valvular heart disease in patients with heart failure were higher than those in patients without heart failure (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, respiratory failure, renal insufficiency, valvular heart disease were risk factors for heart failure in critically ill elderly patients. Conclusion Coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and respiratory failure are risk factors for heart failure in elderly critically ill patients. When treating patients with this disease, comprehensive consideration should be given to their underlying diseases. Key words: Elderly; Critical illness; Heart failure; Risk factor
