The possibility is considered of reducing fuel used by motorists by bringing about a change in the way they drive their cars. Although it is possible to lower fuel consumption by reducing speed, experiments have shown that it is also possible for fuel usage to be lowered without loss of speed. If every driver were as good as the best, fuel savings of between 10% and 15% could be achieved throughout the European community. It is thought unlikely that a programme aimed at educating motorists to drive economically would have any lasting effect, but that it would be possible to install a small computer or microprocessor in a car to ensure that the vehicle was driven in an economic fashion. The possibility of such devices becoming widely available is briefly discussed, and it is concluded that it would probably need another oil crisis to bring about widespread acceptance.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 824263.
