Inspection and evaluation of cams using CAD system

Abstract One of the problem of the Industry wherein the machinery operate using cams is to replace worn out cams. In most of the cases the machines might have been imported and as such the detailed drawing of the cam will not be available to manufacture and replace them. Many people in such cases approach R and D organizations for generating suitable data for its manufacture. It is a very difficult task for any one by any means to generate drawing from the worn out or damaged cam. Even to do any satisfactory work in this regard lot of information and discussion is required, but in most of the cases the customer is unable to provide the required information. The first step for such work is to inspect the damaged cam. Even for checking a good cam there are no standards or methods available for inspecting it. Some of the doubts are what is to be inspected even if a cam drawing is available? If it is inspected as per the drawing is it sufficient? When such a work has to be done using a CAD system is it economical? These are some of the questions to be answered before taking up such work. Based on the experience in inspecting and evaluating such cams using a CAD system some inspection methods and some suggestions and recommendations are given in this article.
