37 Introduction Personal finance experts commonly recommend that individuals and families limit their use of credit in favor of cash in difficult economic times. This strategy can be recommended as a way to control spending. Kates-Smith (2011) suggested that some Americans have taken this advice and replaced the use of credit cards with cash. However, the possibility that a majority of Americans will change their purchasing behavior is improbable.
