Bassanichthys , a New Replacement Generic Name for the Eocene Fish Bassania Bannikov, 2004 (Teleostei, Perciformes)

2006
Recently, I described a new genus of percoid fish, Bassania (Eocottidae, Perciformes), with the type species B. pesciaraensis from the Middle Eocene of northern Italy (Bannikov, 2004). However, the generic name Bassania Bannikov, 2004 is a junior homonym of the lepidopteran genus (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) Bassania Walker, 1860 (see The Generic Names… , 1979), which was kindly indicated to me by Dr. J.K. Page (Great Britain). Moreover, the generic name Bassania Cambridge, 1898 was given to an arachnid and subsequently replaced by Bassaniana Strand, 1928. Because of the homonymy, I propose a new name, Bassanichthys Bannikov, nom. nov. ( pro Bassania Bannikov, 2004), with the type species Bassania pesciaraensis Bannikov, 2004 (by monotypy), for the genus of Eocene fish. This name is given in honor of the Italian paleoichthyologist F. Bassani, plus the Greek ichthys (fish), masculine gender.
