Iconic Building Competition in Rotterdam

2016
The Spring Introduction Programme 2016 welcomes about 300 international students. Throughout a week of project work students design an iconic building and an academic poster, get familiarized with the Delft study method, and working in multicultural groups. In our Project team, Rotterdam, we chose an iconic building from Rotterdam based on: • Innovative and iconic design • Relevance to Rotterdam’s history & identity Design principles: • Attention to detail – we added trusses, windows, etc. to make it more realistic • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – We chose to use only discarded, reclaimed items for our design We chose the Shipping and Transportation College in Rotterdam – which reflects its identity as the largest port of European Union. While building, we used low cost and recycled material to make our design. Materials like discarded cardboard boxes, Styrofoam, bottle caps and standard stationery material like glue and paper were employed. Innovative ideas included: • The Periscope building has an iconic blue and white checkerboard facade. To present this feature we used beer bottle caps. • The art of Origami was used to make birds and bicycles to make the scene look more alive. • We also modelled the surrounding body of water to give it more contextual significance. Sustainability was considered in using the materials that have been discarded or recycled. We learnt the following things which will be useful in our studies: • It’s important to consider other peoples’ ideas • We assigned tasks tailored to each individual’s strengths. • Innovative ideas add fun to the project.
