IV-AQMS: HTTP and MQTT Protocol from a Realistic Testbed

2019
HTTP and MQTT messaging protocols widely support the Internet of things (IoT) application. These recent years in-vehicle air quality monitoring system has drawn the public's attention. With the assist of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the passengers will be updated with realtime in-vehicle air quality through the web page even in a mobile application. The customised system was deployed on 40 shuttle buses, and the data have collected over the year in Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). In this study, 11 buses were implemented with HTTP protocol while the rest of the 29 buses were applied with the MQTT protocol. The buses travelled both in town and rural area. The appropriate selection of messaging protocol would enhance and improve network effectiveness. Therefore, this paper will focus on the performance of the popular messaging protocol such as HTTP and MQTT inside static and moving vehicle based on the low-cost GSM/GPRS communication module. The result shows that the travelling speed has no effect on the sending rate for both protocols. The sending rate for MQTT is approximately ten times faster than the HTTP. Hence, the MQTT is more suitable and presented the real-time situation.
