The article traces the formation of scientific views of Mykhailo Drahomanov. Specific aspects and directions of historians research work are distinguished. Based on the works of Dragomanov and individual researchers of the socio-political heritage, his ideas about consciousness of Ukrainians in Russia. Political documents of secret organizations that were available to the researcher are identified. The scientist`s position is traced on the national movements in Poland and the Russian Empire, clearly dividing secret organizations in obedience to activity.
