ABSTRACT: During the course of the POINT program, we demonstrated low cost optoelectronic packaging technology that is fully compatible with the standard batch processing and planar fabrication processes used in the electronic packaging industry. The POINT program has advanced the state of the art in such areas as polymer optical waveguides and their interfaces, passive alignment methods, and low cost VCSEL packaging. In addition, we developed advanced tool sets to model both the optical and thermal properties of the optoelectronic packages.
