Stable isotope composition of spelean calcites and gaseous CO2 from Tylicz (Polish Carpathians)

1995
Abstract Spelean calcites discovered in fissures and caverns within flysch deposits at Tylicz (Polish Carpathians) have been examined isotopically together with CO 2 -rich water from several springs occurring in this area. δ 13 C-values of TDC and spelean calcites indicate that CaCO 3 has precipitated under conditions close to carbon isotope equilibrium, with participation of CO 2 of deep origin. Analyses of δ 18 O suggest the existence of oxygen isotope disequilibrium between water and gaseous CO 2 which can be explained by the short time of contact between the CO 2 flux and the shallow groundwaters of meteoric origin.
