Portrait of Benjamin Howard Rand

2010
269 this painting quite different from the many portraits of Eakins’ later career in which the subjects, their character portrayed in a penetrating manner, are usually seen isolated from their surroundings. This early Eakins portrait has been widely exhibited, including at the 1875 Philadelphia Centennial International Exposition and at the 1917 Memorial Exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia).
