Managing Collaborative R&D Projects

2021
R&D projects play a vital role, both for society in developing essential products and services and for the growth of national and global economies. Collaborative R&D between industries and universities, such as the development of COVID-19 related vaccines and interventions, are on the increase and are being sponsored by governments as a means of promoting more open innovation. Major challenges arise when trying to achieve benefits and societal impact from such R&D collaborations including conflicting stakeholder objectives, cultural and communication differences, equitable input of resources and appropriation of value from collective efforts between organisations and even geographic and cognitive distance. Key fields of multidisciplinary research are now converging to meet these challenges, including more effective collaborative project management, a focus on benefits and value management, the management of cultures and governance structures, new approaches to improving partner trust around open innovation. This book brings together many new insights and approaches for improving the impact of open innovation for more effective R&D. It is aimed at helping principle investigators, governance boards, project managers and funding officers to realise the benefits of collaborative innovation. The book is entitled: “Managing Collaborative R&D Projects: Leveraging Open Innovation Knowledge-Flows for Co-Creation” and presents important new insights and case studies.
