The diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusion

Summary In the light of our experience with pleural biopsy we have assessed the value of common aids to the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusions. Pleural biopsy is by far the most valuable investigation. The only indirect evidence of value in reaching a presumptive diagnosis is a positive tuberculin test together with a predominantly lymphocytic pleural fluid.
