Intellectual disability has a major impact on people´s lives, both in the individual and the family. This is why to know the different ways to deal with stress and its impact on family functionality are important aspects to research. This research has the general objective of characterizing family functionality in families with intellectually disabled children. Among the specific objectives we had: (1) to evaluate the strategies to deal with stress, and (2) to relate the way these families deal with stress with family functionality. The study conducted was of corelational type, measuring the relationship between family functionality and the strategies they follow to deal with stress. Random sampling was used, following inclusion and exclusion criteria and the sampling calculator Pita Fernandez. Sample size was used. Among the data collecting instruments used we have Teresa Ortega FFSIL test for family functionality and Sandin and Chorot dealing with stress questionnaire. A descriptive-inferring statistical analysis was conducted. 41 subjects were analyzed and it was found that 33(80,5%) of functional families show relation with the strategies for dealing with stress, focusing a 57,6% (p=0,022); negative self-focusing 27,3% (p=0,095); positive reevaluation 42,4%(p= 0,023); open emotional expression 36,4% (p= 0,543); avoiding 21,1% (p=0,153); social support search 75,8% (p= 0,001); and, religion 81,8% (p= 0,002). It can be concluded that there is relation between the search for social support and religion as strategies to deal with stress and family functionality, in homes with parents and intellectually disabled children.
