To ensure safety and efficacy of controlled release products it is primarily necessary to require pharmacokinetic proof or their bioavailability and controlled release characteristics. Within Europe only in the Nordic countries, in the United Kingdom and in the German Democratic Republic recommendations on requirements on investigation and evaluation of controlled release-products are in force that are based on bioavailability studies
