[Potential role of prenatal care in reducing maternal and perinatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa].

In their examination of the potential role of prenatal consultation (PC) against maternal and neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa the authors consider several issues possibly related to PC as well as conditions for effectiveness. Specific topics considered include screening for obstetrical risk; pregnancy-related medical complications; counseling supporting and informing pregnant women and their families; maternal and neonatal healthcare system organization; and the quality of care and relations between health personnel and pregnant women and their families.
