Assessment of Efficiency of arable Land Protection Policies of China

2017
The aim of this study is to investigate the arable land loss and to assess the efficiency of arable land protection policies of China to control that loss. The time series data of per capita arable land, urban population growth rate, and agricultural value added percentage of gross domestic product and industrial value added percentage of gross domestic product were used to found the results. Data were collected from World Bank organization, World Bank development indicators for the period of 1961 to 2013 (WDI 2016). Regression analysis by ordinary least square method (OLS) was preferred to use to get the desired results. The combination of dependent and independent variables were (Y) per capita arable land hectares used as dependent variable explained by four independent variables as urban population growth rate, agricultural value added percentage of GDP and the industrial value added percentage of GDP and dummy variable for arable land protection policies of China. The empirical results of regression analysis show that the urban population growth rate has positive impact on the per capita arable land hectares at one percent significant level, similarly the results of dummy variable have the positive impact on per capita arable land hectares at five percent significant level. Moreover the results show there were break points in trends of arable land loss, which rejects null hypothesis to indicate the loss of arable land reduces due to arable land protection policies. Therefore the arable land protection policies of China are efficient to control arable land loss.
