A Mobile Device-based Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Management System

2005
As the population of aged people grows, it happens that the geriatric chronic diseases have the tendency to increase. Among them, benign prostatic hyperplasia is a typical chronicle disease which occurs for lots of aged people and requires continuous follow-ups. Usually the disease does not threaten the life, but patients have to see the doctors periodically to take care of it. This paper presents a benign prostatic hyperplasia management system which allows patients to lessen the number of hospital visits by using mobile devices like PDA phones. The developed system enables patients to feed their self-observed symptom data into the disease management system via mobile devices. Then the system makes decision on whether the patients need to see the doctor right now or on the scheduled date. When patients see their doctor face-to-face, the doctor diagnoses the patient's disease state with the consideration of various concerned factors and records them into the management system, and sets their next hospital visit schedule. Using the developed system, the patients can reduce the number of hospital visits and in addition provides the patients with the quality services on the disease management.
