Analysis of genetic parameters and correlation in agronomic traits and quality characteristics in pigeonpea germplasm resources

2009
The present study was conducted to analyze the correlations between 10 agronomic traits of 74 pigeonpea germplasm resources, and the main quality traits of seeds in 38 materials and leaves of 34 materials, and an attempt to study some genetic parameters such as heritability, genetic progress, etc in relation to these characters. The results showed significant correlation among most of the agronomic traits, while a non significant negative correlation was observed among the main quality traits of seeds and leaves. The heritability, genetic variation coefficient and genetic progress of 10 agronomic characters showed great difference in ranges 26.08%-91.37%,9.36%-44.14% and 14.23%-70.24%,respectively.The heritability of the quality traits of seeds and leaves were also found to be higher(as high as 80% or more). The genetic variation coefficient and genetic progress of the 4 quality traits of seeds also differed greatly with a range of 6.10%-35.33% and 10.62%-72.17%,respectively.However,no significant difference was observed in the genetic variation coefficient and genetic advancement of the 3 quality traits of leaves ranging from 8.89%-16.39% and 17.35%-32.27%,respectively.The results revealed that the quality characters of pigeonpea may be screened in early generations during the breeding process. The 100-grain weight, pod length and plant height can be screened in early generations during the screening process of agronomic traits in field, while the leaf length, grain weight per plant, pod width may be screened in later generations.
