RESULTS FROM THE TRL TRIP GENERATION STUDIES IN LONDON

1995
Although it applies throughout the UK, Planning Policy Guidance Note 13 (PPG13) has a key role in London. This paper presents a programme of trip generation surveys covering major land uses in the London area, which was conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and commissioned by the Department of Transport (DoT) in parallel with the development of PPG13. It presents some interim results for office and retail sites, from the surveys, which examine and emphasise some of the underlying factors in the relationship between land use and transport. The TRL surveys aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of the trips attracted to land uses in the London area. They examined trip rates and characteristics of different types of development in different parts of London by time of day, trip purpose, and travel mode. The types of land use covered were: offices, retail, leisure, industry, warehouse, and public buildings. Survey sites were selected to reflect the different travel characteristics of Central, Inner, and Outer London. Three questionnaires were used, and manual counts were made of people and vehicles entering and leaving a site, during a survey day. Detailed site reports were derived form the site data. Trip generation and development location were found to be intimately connected to lifestyle patterns. For the covering abstract see IRRD 879912.
