Participatory evaluation survey for the Karate Kids Project: evaluation study final report.

This report presents the findings of a program evaluation of the "Karate Kids" video a cross-cultural health education effort aimed at street children worldwide that is about prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) AIDS sexual abuse and use of family planning methods such as condoms. The IEC package includes a cartoon video an AIDS training book for educators and an optional pocket comic book. The video focuses on a youth gang in a marketplace who learn self-defense from a street leader. One boys unprotected sex leads to his death from AIDS. Karate and his girlfriend teach kids about sexual transmission of AIDS and condom protection. The story was built upon feedback from street youth in 1988. The video was pretested by over 850 children in Nairobi Colombo Manila Rio de Janeiro New York City and Toronto. It is available in 20 languages for use with out-of-school youth and is useful in stimulating discussion about STDs condom use and sexual exploitation of children by adults. The evaluation aimed to obtain information about the outreach and about childrens understanding of sexual health issues. Evaluation surveys were distributed to over 300 government groups. 76 surveys from 32 countries were returned for analysis. 71% of respondents worked with street children. The video was viewed by over 26702 children. 52.6% of the groups had no problems with the content; 38.2% did. 84% understood the 3 aspects of sexual health in the video. 19.7% objected to its use in the community. The evaluation confirms the videos success.
