Introduction and Aim: Foreign body aspiration is a common pediatric emergency in childhood. It has a high mortality rate in the first three years.Altough foreign body aspirations frequently present with acute respiratory symptoms the severity of the clinical picture may vary.lt may also be present with insidious and vague symptoms or may be introduced by a picture of persistant respiratory infection bronchiectasis or lung abscess. Material and Methods:20 patients with the diagnosis of foreign body aspiration between January 2001- January 2009 were retrospectively investigated. Results :Of the 20 patients, 8 were male (% 40 ), and 12 were female (% 60 ).The mean age was 2.6±1.31 , and 17 ( %85) of the patients were under the age of 3 years. Most common symptoms on admission were respectively cough,respiratory distress ,wheezing, fever and cyanosis .Only 5 cases (%25) were have foreign body aspiration history. %35 precent of the patients were admitted within the first 24 hours following the aspiration, and 65 % of the patients were admitted after the first 24 hours..In the 14 cases (%70 ), foreign bodies located in the right stem bronchus ,and the most common foreign bodies were dried fruits (%65) and otherfoods (%18). There was significant differences of fever and dispnea symptoms and radiografic findings between the early and late admitted patients (p < 0.05 ). Conclusion : The foreign body aspirations can be easyly confused with the similar clinical findings encountered together with other pediatric pulmonary problems in the childhood. Therefore the patients who have suspicion of foreign body aspiration should be evaluated promptly and systematically and treated as soon as possible.
