Abstract 17521: Roles of Skeletal Muscle in Ventilatory Response to Exercise: Comparison between Myocardial Infarction and Diabetes Mellitus

Background: Skeletal muscle plays important roles in determining exercise capacity and generating symptoms. This study aims to compare the roles of skeletal muscle in ventilation during incremental exercise between myocardial infarction (MI) and diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: We studied 60 patients with MI alone (57 men, 59±9 years) and 86 patients with DM alone (55 men, 54±14 years). Skeletal muscle volume was measured using a bioelectrical impedance method. A symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise test was performed to determine exercise capacity. Results: Body composition analysis showed that skeletal muscle index was not significantly different between MI group (8.3±1.5 kg/m2) and DM group (9.2±1.9 kg/ms). In both groups, the skeletal muscle index showed a significant inverse correlation with peak VE/VO2 (MI: r=-0.39, p=0.002; DM: r=-0.48, p<0.0001) and peak VE/VCO2 (MI: r=-0.47, p=0.0002; DM: r=-0.49, p<0.0001).
