Presentation of Case A 29-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of left flank pain and gross hematuria. There was a 14-year history of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, with poor compliance and 15 previous admissions to a hospital, the majority for control of diabetes mellitus and management of diabetic ketoacidosis. The patient was in her usual state of health until several weeks before entry, when she began to experience diffuse pains.
