2016
This research was aimed to find out kinds of maxims and their violations in the animation movie Frozen by using Grice’s theory. The object of the study was the manuscript of the conversations between the main characters of the movie i.e. Elsa and Anna. This research used a qualitative research design. The results of the research showed that: (1) In their conversations, the main characters applied the four maxims i.e. maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation/relevance, and maxim of manner, (2) The maxim that was obeyed the most often by the main characters was the maxim of relation/relevance, (3) The main characters obeyed the maxim of quality by giving the truth when they talk to each other, (4) The main characters obeyed the maxim of manner by giving clearly and briefly information. They also violated the maxim by telling the rambling information, (5) The maxims that were violated more often are the maxim of quantity and the maxim of relation/relevance, (6) The main characters violated the maxim of relation by giving the information not relevantly to the questions, (7) The main characters violated the maxim of quantity by giving more/less information in their utterances. The violation of the maxim could affect the conversations and it could cause a breakdown of communication.
