Reaction of alkyl derivatives of titanium and aluminum with carbocations

1984
1. Conditions were found for the reactions of Ph3C+TiCl5−with Cp2TiEtCl and of Ph3CCl with ethylaluminum and diethylaluminum chlorides and the composition of the products of these reactions was determined. A mechanism was proposed. 2. A conductometric study has shown that the reaction of Ph3CCl with OAC has a rapid step for the formation of Ph3C+[EtAlCl3]− and Ph3C+[Et2AlCl2]− ionic complexes which dissociate into ions to a significant extent. 3. The rate-limiting step for the reaction of the triphenylmethyl cation with organotitanium and organoaluminum compounds is a one-electron transfer from the M-C σ-bond to the carbocation leading to the formation of highly reactive intermediate biradical complexes.
