Control and safety enhancement of a Wind Energy Conversion System

2019
In the few past decades, electrical energy has become a vital component and the interest for alternative energy sources has an exponential rise because of the limitation in conventional energy sources. Wind energy become one of the most important renewable energy sources. In this paper, in order to supply remote areas, an investigation of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a double fed induction generator (DFIG) is carried out. In order to ensure the safety of the connected load, the main purpose of the present work is to maintain output stator voltage and frequency at their reference values whether for load demand power variations and wind speed fluctuations using the sliding mode control strategy. Moreover, in order to ensure the rotor side converter (RSC) safety, a strategy that compute the safe operation zones of the system is proposed in this paper. Simulation results are performed using Matlab /Simulink environment and show the effectiveness of the computed safe zones of the wind energy conversion system operation with while applying a predetermined wind speed and load profile.
