Study between essential hypertension and carotid atherosclerosis in aged people

Objective To study the relationship between essential hypertension and carotid atherosclerosis in the aged patients.Methods 136 patients aged 80-95 were selected.They were divided into two groups of 92 cases with essential hypertension and 44 cases with normal hypertension.The degree of carotid atherosclerosis was compared between two groups through ultrasonic testing.Results There were significant differences in degree of carotid intima-media thickening and the numbers of plaque between essential hypertension group and normal hypertension group[(1.10±0.35)mm vs(0.96±0.29)mm,P0.05].Conclusions The blood pressure increase the degree of carotid intima-media thickness and the numbers of plaque,and accelerate carotid atherosclerosis.
