Massive simulations on GPGPUs of subsurface flow on heterogeneous soils

2021
Modelling subsurface flow processes is one of the key factors to describe the water cycle. To this aim, a variably saturated flow model was developed based on the Extended Cellular Automata (XCA) formalism and used to simulate an ensemble of 100 synthetic two-dimensional plots with heterogeneous hydraulic properties. The model was implemented exploiting the functionalities of the OpenCAL library, which allowed high computational efficiency using multi-core (CPU) processors and even higher performances with many-core (GPGPU) architectures.
