Influence of Orem support-education system on breast cancer patients′ self-management during chemotherapy

Objective To explore the Orem support-education system′s influence on the breast cancer patients′ self-management during chemotherapy. Methods A total of 75 cases of patients with breast cancer receiving postoperative chemotherapy were divided into observation group with 39 cases and control group with 36 cases, according to random alphabet. The Chinese Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (C-SUPPH) was used to assess the patients′ level of self-management sense. The control group was given routine care, and according to self-management and self-requirement, the observation group was supported with Orem support-education system which could offer humanistic psychological and emotional support. Results The self-management sense level assessment of breast cancer patients during chemotherapy showed that 12% of the 75 patients were in high level and 82.7% patients were in the medium level. After the intervention, the patients′ total score of self-management sense level was (103.4±18.9) in the observation group, which was significantly higher than (50.94±8.31) in the control group (t=-15.74, P<0.01). Conclusions Orem education supporting system is effective to promote breast cancer patients′ self-management and coping capacity during chemotherapy.
