Control strategy of energy storage system for power stability in a wind farm

Fluctuations of wind turbine depending on weather conditions have adverse impacts on power quality, such as voltage and frequency. Integrated energy storage systems in a wind generator reduce fluctuations and get stability of electric power systems. This paper presents the battery energy storage system for output power smoothing of wind turbine. The system consists of power conversion units connected in parallel, transformer, switchgear and Li-ion batteries stacked in parallel or serial. The goal of the proposed control algorithm is to provide as much smoothing as possible, so that the wind farm can be dispatched on the forecasted wind conditions. The effectiveness of this control strategy has been tested by using an actual wind farm data. Simulation results are verified control strategies that have effective and similar performance to suppress wind power fluctuations applied wind power profile previously.
