Extensive vascular calcification in end stage renal disease

2012
Patients with chronic kidney disease are prone to vascular calcification and this is associated with increased mortality due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Vascular calcification (VC) is now recognized as a marker of atherosclerotic plaque burden as well as a major contributor to loss of arterial compliance and increased pulse pressure that is seen with advancing age, diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Here, we report a case of extensive VC involving intra-abdominal and limb vessels in a patient with type 2 DM, systemic hypertension (HTN), dyslipidemia and CKD stage 5 on maintenance hemodialysis (CKD 5D). Key words: Vascular calcification, Chronic kidney disease, Monckeberg’s medial sclerosis. CASE REPoRT
