“A Tobit Estimation of the Student’s Time Use in Higher Education”/Una estimación Tobit del uso del tiempo por los estudiantes universitarios

This piece of work intends to go in depth into the knowledge of the time that students devote to different activities throughout their life as university students, on the ground of the Consumption Theory that assumes an utility maximization behavior on the students’ side. Additionally, for a better understanding and explanation of their behavior, we have used the Eligibility model (Levy-Garboua, 1976). This argues that youngsters have to make choices in order to achieve an optimal combination of actual and future satisfactions in their student status, and that this will be refl ected in the time spent in their university activities. In order to check the Eligibility model’s assumptions, we have used the information stated in an ad hoc survey conducted among the students enrolled at the University of Malaga. A Tobit type analysis has been undertaken to this aim. Our results shed further light on the patterns of time use by university students and allow to assert that, broadly speaking, the Eligibility model’s assumptions are supported by the empirical evidence. Este trabajo tiene como principal objetivo profundizar en el conocimiento del uso que los estudiantes hacen de su tiempo en las distintas actividades que realizan durante su paso por la universidad, bajo el enfoque de la teoria del consumidor que presupone una maximizacion de sus respectivas funciones de utilidad. Para comprender y explicar el comportamiento de los estudiantes se hace uso a su vez del modelo de elegibilidad de Levy-Garboua (1976). Este plantea como hipotesis central que el joven tendra que hacer elecciones para combinar de forma optima las satisfacciones presentes y futuras que su condicion de estudiante implica, las cuales se refl ejaran en la distribucion del tiempo destinado a las actividades universitarias. La contrastacion del modelo de elegibilidad se ha realizado a partir de la informacion contenida en una encuesta ad hoc efectuada a los alumnos matriculados en la Universidad de Malaga, y empleando a tal fi n una especifi cacion econometrica de tipo Tobit. Los resultados obtenidos arrojan luz sobre los patrones de uso del tiempo por los estudiantes universitarios y permiten afi rmar que, en general, se cumplen los supuestos planteados por el modelo de elegibilidad.
