RE: ROUTINE CIRCUMCISION

To the Editor: I wish to express my sincere congratulations to Mr. R. A. Shaw and Dr. W. O. Robertson for their most lucid survey of the problem of "routine circumcision" [Amer J Dis Child106:216 (Aug) 1963]. The experimental approach and the style of their study are certainly an example to follow. I have often wondered how American medicine had accepted so uncritically such procedures as T and A and circumcision as "routine." Indeed, to assist me in my speculations I have tried to collect several references on the subject, from the most ancient to the very contemporary. I was ready to conclude that the solution to this problem ought to be delegated to the social psychologist when the good study of Shaw and Robertson appeared in print. I do hope that these investigators will continue their efforts and, some day, will provide us with a hypothesis on the
