A Survey of Different Cooling Methods for Traction Motor Application

This paper presents a study of cooling technologies implemented on traction motors for Electrical Vehicles (EVs). Cooling options presented in this paper are forced liquid cooling, oil cooling application, and gas cooling as well as the advantages and disadvantages with each option. Maximization effectiveness of cooling for a given motor variation will assist engineers during their design of an EV. This study includes an analysis of the current cooling options that is being used for traction application, as well as, the cooling options currently being researched as next-generation cooling methodologies. Finally, this paper aims to assist in presenting the research and development of current industrial trends in cooling implementation, while allowing future engineers into an insight of this field of research.
