The impact of environmental legislation about area cultivatable is the focus of discussions involving the new Brazilian Forest Code and the family farming in Santa Catarina. The current research focused on assessing the relationship between the total area of the property, area cultivatable and permanent preservation areas - APP in accordance with current environmental legislation. The study took place in eleven family rural properties of Rio Fortuna - SC, where the data were surveyed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) with the aid of property owners to assess the area used for agricultural activities and their possible variation front implementation of environmental legislation. Study was a comparison of two techniques of data surveys for analysis of areas, geoprocessing and geodesic survey with the use GNSS. The study area has reached 286.80 ha of which 199.88 ha are cultivatable. This area came to 152,98 ha with environmental zoning in accordance with the Brazilian Forest Code. On this circumstance there was a real reduction of 16.35% of the area cultivatable due to the implementation of environmental legislation.
